Item Subtlety and Diagnostic Power of The MMPI Pa Scale

Abstract
Items of the MMPI were basically constructed according to the empirical diagnostic power of the criterion groups. The rational approach to the psychological test construction claims that the obvious face-valid items were more accurate and efficient to evaluate psychological construct. Empirical approach, however, claims that subtle items were necessary and more resistive¢¥to the respons set, particularly evaluating abnormal characteristics. A praticular point of controversy between these two approaches has been concerned with the relative value of subtle items. This study is aimed to evaluate the diagnostic power of the MMPI Pa scale items according to obvious vs. subtle dimensions. The subjects were consisted of 150 normal and 150 paranoid schizophrenia. Pa scale items were: rated by psychiatrists and experienced psychiatic nurses according to obvious, neutral and subtle items. Subsequently, the response frequency rate of each items were calculated. The results were as follows;
¨ç The response frequency rate of the normal group to the face-valid items was 2.4% in
the scoring direction.
¨è The response frequency rate of the normal group to the subtle items were 44% in the scoring direction.
¨é The response frequercy rate in the scoring direction of the paranoid schizophrenia to the face-valid, neutral and subtle items were not statistically significant. In the light of the response frequency rate of the normal group to the subtle items, empirical diagnostic ability of paranoid schizophrenia by subtle items was difficult to accept.
¨ê There was some items among the neutral and subtle items which have high diagnostic power of the paranoid schizophrenia.
